The river disappears into the sand

I took the dogs out to the Hout Bay beach this morning. To my surprise, the river has no outlet to the sea any more. I had just read that the same happens, or used to happen before dredging, to Zandvlei on the other side of the peninsula. The amount of water that comes down the valley gets absorbed into the sand and reaches the sea under the surface. Fascinating.
