There was a fire raging on the Table Mountain, Cape Town, last night. If you're in England you've most probably heard about it on the news. After all, it was a British guy who started it, and the woman who died in the fire was also British.
Apparently, the 36-year-old tourist had thrown a cigarette out of the window, noticed he'd started a fire, and yet driven away. The Ranger, who saw this, radioed another Ranger with the registration number, and this second Ranger managed to catch the guy. He was in court today, but is out on bail for now.
The fire caused a lot of damage both to the Nature Reserve and the city. We're fine here in Hout Bay.
We talked about the fire today with Joyce. She told us that a year ago there had been a fire where she lives. This fire was started by a quarreling couple, which didn't just throw cups and plates at each other, but among other things, a fire burner. The fire spread fast in the 60 kmph wind and destroyed 500 shacks, including Joyce's. She lost her car, her furniture, and everything in fact, except her nightie.

Yes Minna, we have heard about the fire here in England, and seen the pictures too. It hard to believe that anyone these days is so ignorant as to start a fire, however accidentally, and then just drive away without a care in the world. Maybe this incident will be the one that gets the message across, "Don't walk away, do something about it".
