There is a small sauna in the basement. A tiny electric heater, kiuas, sits in the corner. We knew that it works, but we had not tested it properly.
Yesterday evening kids: Matias, Harrison, Milja and Dan, left for movies and Tapio, the correspondent, came to visit. When kids had left we heated the sauna and went in after a while. It was really bad. There are practically no stones in the kiuas. The temprerature climbed into reasonable level only after the thermostat was crancked to full. Even then some of the water thrown on the stones dripped through. We need more small "kiuas" stones!
Even when the air was relatively hot, our bums were cold. The bences are at the same level as the stones of the kiuas. They need to be raised higher. The wooden panels surrounding the walls have been pained with a sealant which is a big non-no. It was actually good that the sauna did not heat properly. The surface of the walls would have been painfully hot. The walls did not heat up. Part of the reason was that there is no insulation nor film to stop humidity to go through the walls in there.
To top it up, the fresh air vent is on the other side of the door than the kiuas. It should be under it. There is no out going vent at the top of the room, only one at the mid level in the middle of the door. On the other hand, with wall as flimsy as these, you do not need it!
In the end, I did get hot enough for me to dip into the pool for the first time.
Tapio and I spent quite some time drawing plans how to remake the sauna room into more proper and functional.
