Cheese, Gromit, cheese!

Heikki had heard from someone, that if you go to one festival in Cape Town it should be the Cheese festival. So we bought tickets.

We went for a quick visit to our Hout Bay house in the morning, and then drove up the mountain to Seija’s house. Seija was away and Joona decided to stay at home, but Hille joined us for the day.

The festival is outside Cape Town, on a farm in the wine region between Paarl and Franchishoek.

The wind was amazingly strong. The air was filled with sand.

There were some hundreds of stalls in the festival area – some outside under cover, some inside a couple of large tents. Most of the stalls had been set up by cheese makers, others by vineyards.

We must have spent about four hours there. That’s four hours of eating cheese and tasting wine. I was the chauffer, so it was Hille and Heikki who did the wine tasting, but we all enjoyed the cheese.

I was a bit surprised by the people there. Not a lot, but a bit. There were thousands of people there. Almost everyone was white. And no one was drunk. If such a festival was held in Finland, I’m sure many would go and get plastered. You could eat cheese and drink for maybe eight hours, and all this cost just R70 (about £7, €10).

We tasted some fine cheeses, and many plain ones. I generally enjoyed the halloumi cheeses, which has been my favorite variety for a year or two. Halloumi is quite salty. It tastes excellent when fried or BBQ’d.
