After checking our backs in the mirror this morning, we came to the conclusion that we'd had enough sun. Instead of going for another day in the waves, we thought of taking it easy and going for a relaxed drive around the Cape peninsula.
We first headed for Matias's school. Even though it's holidays now, we were welcomed to the grounds so Hanna and Kristian could see where Matias spends his weekdays. We didn't try to get in the main building, but we visited the Parthenon and the kids had a run around in the Jungle Gym.
We tasted some wine in the Constantia Uitsig vineyard. They have arranged such a nice session of wine tasting there. They don't just pour the wine in your glass and leave you to it, but they also discuss the wines with you. I strongly dislike their Constantia White, which smells vile, like wet dirty sheep. Their Sauvignon Blanc 2005, which tastes of gooseberry, and their Semillon Reserve 2004, which has a star fruit and kiwi aroma, are just divine. The Sauvignon Blanc reminds me of a little gooseberry bush in my parents' Tuulos summer cottage - I love the berries, but most years a raccoon-dog beats me to it and eats the berries.
We then drove down to Boulders to see the penguins. They stood in the grass in pairs, swaying a little in the strong wind with their eyes closed. Matias got a contact with one of them, one whose partner was digging a nest under a bush next to us. Matias stood with his hands straight down next to his body and moved his head from side to side (like Asian Indians do when they agree with something). The penguin copied Matias's movement.
We drove around the peninsula, stopping at some baboons we saw on the way. Kristian and Hanna managed to take some photos. We took the Capman's Peak road home. The views were gorgeous, as always.
