The infamous South African xenophobic violence reached Cape Town last night: SABC article. Du Noon and Milnerton mentioned in the article are North of Cape Town city centre. Radio this morning was advising commuters to avoid the area.
For some reason the the SABC article talks about "Masiphumelele informal settlement in Hout Bay" where foreigners are being evacuated. Masiphumelele is South of Hout Bay on the other side of the mountain near Long Beach and between Fish Hoek and Kommetjie.
So far the situation in Hout Bay proper have been peaceful. There was a community meeting in Mandela Park, the local township on Wednesday evening apparently called together by some who wanted to attack foreigners. However, that was not the outcome of the meeting. Police have been informed and they are ready to react the moment there is trouble. There was toyi-toying on the streets afterwards. The foreigners living in the township are cautious and worried.
The worst might still be ahead. The weekend is ahead and people will be idle and drinking. That is usually the root of all trouble. High unimployment and sharply raising food and fuel costs do not help either. Luckily Mandela Park is so small that police can control the whole area easily. Good thing, too, that the new police station is right next to Mandela Park.
