The weekend in townships across the country was tense. Some violence, looting and raping has been going on. Foreigners, that is black non South Africans living there, have been scared. Most of them left Mandela Park over the weekend. They were sheltered in the harbor area and their shacks have been looted. In the more established central area, the inhabitants were able to stop the looting, but in the fringes there was no chance. The street lights have been on and army has been patrolling the streets.
Outside townships life has continued as normal. Even to the extent that the president Mbeki who condemned the attacks in public speech only two weeks after they started, is already in Japan (!) in a meeting celebrating African unity.
A few weeks ago no-one could have believed what will happen. The country is in shock.
