Milja and I have talked about doing a road trip, and we convinced Heikki this was a good time to go. The dollar is weak and there's lots to see in the US, so that's where we're heading.
Dan got us connected on Google-maps and we started pinning US locations (those we want to see) on the map. We've mainly chosen nature reserves, but we also pinned some relatives, and places like the Universal Studios in Hollywood, and Las Vegas. The places are spread as a thick belt from East to West. We'll go and dip our feet both in the Atlantic and the Pacific.
I looked at RV (recreational vehicle) rental sites and discussion groups. We decided to rent a car we could live in, as it would save us from transferring our stuff back and forth between the car and hotel/motel rooms. It would be a major waste of time.
Heikki and I booked tickets to fly there about a month ago. We booked Milja and Dan's flights this week.
Heikki came back from England today and brought me a book of US National Parks and another one on driving an RV in the US. I started looking through it an hour ago. One of the sections was about hiring the car. It said we should hire at least 3 months before the trip, and in Alaska, up to a year in advance. We might be too late, especially as we would need a huge one, as only the largest one would accommodate all of us.
I woke Heikki up and asked to use his laptop to phone the US. (Heikki had been asleep for 4 hours by then).
We got an RV. Phew. They didn't have any left in the location closest to us in New York, but there was one at another place nearby. We're really going to do this trip, and not just travel around the museums in New York for a month :)
